Richlands High School student Paige Shifflett got to spend a summer vacation in 2007 that most can only dream about!
Shifflett joined former RHS volleyball coach Jeff Ray and several other female athletes on a trip to beautiful Hawaii to see the fabulous sights and to play some volleyball at the same time.
Shifflett was a member of Team Virginia, a volleyball squad comprised of eight athletes from different parts of Virginia, which took part in the King Kamehameha volleyball tournament in Honolulu, Hawaii during the period of July 10-17.
Forty-two different teams from around the country competed in the event and Shifflett and her team performed in the Imua Bracket and finished fourth among the bracket’s 16 teams. The tournament also featured the Ha’Aheo Bracket (16 teams) and the Pool Play Bracket (10 teams).
Team Virginia lost to Florida/Washington in its first match by scores of 16-21, 10-21 and 16-21. The group recovered in the second match against Illinois and won 21-14, 21-19 and 14-21. The third match for Team Virginia was against Ohio North and Shifflett and her teammates took a 21-18, 13-21 and 21-16 win. The team lost its final match to Oregon by scores of 23-25 and 14-25.
Members of team Virginia are Paige Shifflett (Richlands High School), Lyndsey Newberry (Honaker High School), Stephanie Owen (Lebanon High School), Kayla Stump (Giles High School), Sabrina Huff and Chelsea Kinley (Auburn High School), Carissa Broughman (Covington High School) and Amanda Redman (Alleghany High School).
