Although George Wythe Tennis Coach Rob Shelton lost the top four players from last year’s team that won the district and finished runner-up in the region, he won’t get a lot of sympathy from too many other teams.
Mainly because the team appears headed for another successful season. The team was 5-1 in early season play shortly after the team photo was taken.
The top four are gone but the number five and six seeds from last year have returned at number one and two. They are junior Keith Edwards and sophomore Thomas Harrison.
The coach anticipates the biggest competition to come from region powerhouses Radford and Galax. Radford was the Region C champ last year, and Shelton expects it to be very strong again.
“Our goal is to come out and be competitive,” said the coach. “We have been pretty successful.” But the coach is a little worried about the depth of the team. There are only seven players; he normally has about 10 or more.
