Girls win three road games

The girls’ varsity basketball team beat Christiansburg for the second time this season, defeating the Blue Demons 52-47 at Christiansburg Wednesday, December 17. The Demons built a big lead in the first half, but ran out of players down the stretch.
Christiansburg opened the game with a 12-11 lead in the first quarter. For the Buffaloes, Brittany Avancini had a three pointer and two free throws, Kayla Hartman had a field goal and two free throws and Carmen Bolt had a field goal.
The Demons inflicted the worst quarter of the season on the Buffs in the second, outscoring Floyd 14-3 to take a 28-14 halftime lead. Amber Quesenberry had the only points on a field goal and a free throw.
Floyd started coming back in the third, outscoring Christiansburg 20-10 to cut the lead to 38-34 at the end of three. Hartman had six points on a field goal and four free throws, Brandy Phillips had two field goals, Alisha Gray and Karina Miller each had a field goal and a free throw, Brittany Bourne had two free throws, Quesenberry had a field goal, and Avancini made a free throw.
The Demons, who dressed only seven players, had three to foul out, which aided the Buffalo comeback as Floyd took the fourth quarter 18-9. Bourne had a three and two free throws, Hartman made five field goals, Avancini made three free throws, and Miller had a field goal and a free throw.
The Buffaloes outscored the Demons 24-6 from the free throw line. Christiansburg missed 14 free throw attempts.

Alisha Gray got the winning basket in the closing seconds as Floyd beat Bassett 58-56 at Bassett Friday, December 19. The win gave Floyd a sweep over the Bengals this season.
Bassett took the early lead, outscoring Floyd 16-12 in the first quarter. Carmen Bolt had six points on two field goals and two free throws, Brandy Phillips hit a three and Gray had a field goal and a free throw.
The Buffaloes outscored the Bengals 15-11 in the second quarter to forge a 27-27 halftime tie. Brittany Avancini had eight points on a three, a field goal and three free throws, Brittany Bourne had two field goals, and Kayla Hartman hit a three.
In the third quarter Bassett outscored Floyd 22-20 to regain a 49-47 lead. Avancini had four field goals, Hartman had two field goals, Bolt had a field goal and a free throw and Gray and Karina Miller each had field goals.
Gray had two fourth quarter field goals, including a stick back with six seconds left that was the game-winner. Hartman had two field goals, Bourne had a field goal and Avancini made a free throw.

The Buffaloes picked up another road win, defeating Carroll County 80-67 at Hillsville Monday, December 22. Brittany Avancini had a double-double, with a game high 19 points and 10 assists.
Floyd opened with a 20-6 first quarter. Avancini hit a three and a field goal, Brandy Phillips had a field goal and two free throws, Brittany Bourne had two field goals, Carmen Bolt had a field goal and a free throw, Kayla Hartman had a field goal, and Amber Quesenberry had two free throws.
The Cavaliers outscored the Buffaloes by one point over the last three quarters, although Floyd’s 16-15 edge in the second quarter made it 35-21 at the half.Hartman had a three and two field goals, Alisha Gray had two field goals, Bolt had a field goal and a free throw, and Avancini had a field goal.
Carroll outscored Floyd 24-20 in the third to trim the lead to 55-41. Gray had ten points on five field goals, Bolt had two field goals, and Avancini, Karina Miller and Brandy Phillips had field goals.
In the fourth quarter Avancini had ten points on a pair of threes and two field goals, Gray, who had a career high 18 points had two field goals, and Phillips, Bourne, Hartman, Amber Quesenberry and Amber Ingram had one field goal each.
