Floyd County won its third straight Region C championship, beating Chilhowie 54-47 in the tournament finals Saturday, March 1, at Lord Botetourt High School in Daleville. Floyd hosts Honaker in the Group A, Division 2 first round Saturday at Christiansburg.
The Buffaloes got a battle from the second seeded Warriors, who won the Hogoheegee District championship. “Some things were hard,” said coach Alan Cantrell. “We just had to keep working and playing defense.”
Chilhowie took the early lead as Emily Doane hit a three and a jumper for a 5-0 start. Carmen Bolt scored inside, and Brittany Bourne got a three-point play to tie the game.
After a Heather Hash free throw, Bourne scored to give Floyd its first lead at 7-6. Krystal Patton got a stick back ,and then Brittany Acancini scored to put the Buffs up by one again.
Fallon Walker made a free throw, and Patton converted a three-point play to put the Warriors up by three. A basket by Brandy Phillips got Floyd within 12-11 at the end of the first.
Phillips opened the second with two free throws and added a field goal for a three-point Floyd lead. Walker put back a missed free throw, and Patton made a hook shot to put Chilhowie up 16-15.
Bourne scored on a steal, and Patton beat the press for a lay in. Kayla Hartman hit a three to give Floyd a two-point edge.
Kelley Pierce hit from the baseline to tie the game. Nicole Snead hit from the baseline and made two free throws, and Hartman hit from the baseline to make it 26-20 at 1:47.
Nikki Sage scored on a drive and a baseline jumper, and Patton scored on a drive to tie the game. Floyd had the ball out of bounds with two seconds left, and Bourne hit a three from the top of the key to make it 29-26 at the half.
Bourne got two free throws, Molly Brown got a basket, and Bourne hit a jumper to open the third and put Floyd up 35-26. Doane finally ended the drought with a jumper at 3:19.
Avancini made a free throw, and Brown hit a three to give Floyd a 39-28 lead at 2:16. Patton scored on a drive, and Brown made a free throw. A three by Sage made it 40-33 at the end of three.
Avancini opened the fourth with a pair of free throws. A three by Doane cut the lead to 42-36. Bolt made a free throw, and Brown hit from the baseline at 4:03 to put the lead back at nine.
Walker beat the press for a basket, and Hartman made both ends of one-and-one. Hash got a lay in at 2:20, with Bourne making two free throws at 1:42.
Walker got a lay-in with Bourne getting a free throw with 56 seconds left. Patton made two free throws with 41 seconds left, and after a five second call, Doane hit a three at :36 to cut the lead to 50-47.
Floyd lost the ball on a walk, but Chilhowie failed to convert. Avancini and Brown each made two free throws in the final 25 seconds for the final margin.

Floyd: Avancini 9, Phillips 6, Brown 10, Bourne
