Girls win opener

The varsity softball team opened the season with a 5-2 win over Pulaski at Floyd Wednesday, March 12.
The Cougars got a base runner with two outs in the first but did not score. With one out, Amber Ingram was hit by a pitch, Kelli Walters Doubled, and Ashley Slusher singled. They all scored to give Floyd a 3-0 lead.
In the top of the third, Ashley Alley got a lead off double for Pulaski and scored to cut the lead to 3-1. The Buffs failed to score in the bottom of the inning.
In the fourth, Courtney Smith and Hall got consecutive singles with one out and added runs to increase the lead to 5-1. Pulaski got its final run in the fifth.
Ingram, a freshman making her varsity debut, struck out five straight batters in the last two innings and got a ground out to end the game. Ingram struck out 12 and allowed one earned run.

The Buffaloes picked up a second straight home win, beating Carroll County at Floyd Thursday, March 14. It was the second straight win over a Group AA team.
The Cavaliers went up 1-0 in the third after Kim Caudill got a lead off triple and scored.
Floyd came back with three runs in the fifth. Chelsea Link got a lead off single and Courtney Smith and Hall also scored for a 3-0 lead.
Carroll cut the lead to 3-2 after Kayla Jones got a lead off single and scored in the sixth. Freshman Kaitlin Mills got her first victory, striking out 10 and allowing two hits.

Floyd improved its record to 3-0 with an 11-0 win over Galax at Floyd Tuesday, March 18.
Amber Ingram drew a one-out walk and scored to put Floyd up 1-0 in the first. In the second J. Hall, Sherri Philpott, Kaitlin Mills and Ingram scored to give Floyd a 5-0 lead.
The Buffaloes added six more runs in the third as Stephani Goad, Phiopott, Mills, Alisha Gray, Ashley Slusher and Alexis Roop scored.
Tempry Goff allowed one hit and struck out nine to pick up the victory. Roop had four RBI and Ingram had three.
