Girls beat Radford

The varsity girls’ basketball team remained undefeated in district play, beating Radford at Floyd Saturday, February 2. The game was postponed by weather on Thursday and Friday.
It didn’t take long for the Lady Buffs to heat up, as Floyd jumped out to a 14-point lead in the first four and a half minutes. Molly Brown got the first basket of the game, with Sarah Hale getting a beat-the-press basket for the Bobcats.
Then the Buffs went on a 14-0 run. Brittany Avancini hit a three, Lindsey Thompson scored off a turnover, Brandy Phillips hit from the baseline, Thompson got a three off an inbounds play, Brittany Bourne made two free throws, and Brown got a jumper to make it 16-2 at 3:31.
Pip Pattison ended the run with a free throw, and then Sarah Donnelly made 3 two of four free throws and Maria Sydnor made to free throws to get it to 16-7. Thompson hit from the baseline. Mary Wiley made a pair of foul shots for Radford.
Floyd closed out the quarter with Phillips scoring on a cut and Thompson getting a put back at the buzzer to make it 22-9.
A 19-2 run hiked the lead to 30 points at the 2:43 mark. Thompson made a free throw and a three-pointer before Candace Akers scored again for the Bobcats.
Wiley would add a free throw for the only other Radford tally in a 15-1 sub-run. Brown hit a jumper, Bourne made two free throws, Thompson scored on a turnover, a stickback and two free throws, and Avancini hit from the baseline and converted a three-point play to make it 41-11.
Donnelly hit a three-pointer at 2:17 to end a field goal drought of over ten minutes. Floyd closed out the half as Amber Quesenberry hit from the baseline, Marissa Bowman scored on a drive, and Telena Hollandsworth got a lay-in with 16 seconds left to give Floyd a 47-15 lead at the half.
The Bobcats outscored Floyd in the second half, with a 14-11 third quarter advantage. Sydnor opened the frame with a put back, and after a post move by Bourne, hit a jumper.
Phillips made two free throws for the Buffs, which was followed by a drive by Pattison and two free throws by Wiley.
Brown scored in the post for Floyd. Wiley hit a three to make it 53-26. Avancini made a lay-in with Akers getting a free throw for Radford.
Floyd led 58-29 at the end of the period as Kayla Hartman made a free throw and Carmen Bolt got a basket.
Radford took the fourth quarter 15-9, with Sydnor getting six points. Bowman, Hartman, Quesenberry and Alisha Gray had two points each for the Buffs.
