Girls beat Carroll

The varsity girls’ basketball team finished the regular season with a 20-game winning streak. Floyd closed the schedule with a 79-35 win over Carroll County at Hillsville Thursday, February 14.
The Cavs took their only lead on a basket by Haley Lineberry. Carroll would only get one more field goal in the first quarter.
Brittany Avancini tied the game with a basket, and Brittany Bourne and Lindsey Thompson hit threes for an 8-2 lead. Kayla Goins made two free throws, then Carmen Bolt got a lay-in and two free throws, Kayla Hartman got a put back, Avancini made two free throws after a steal, and Thompson got a jumper for an 18-4 lead.
Lineberry got a rebound basket with 14 seconds left, but Molly Brown hit a jumper with six seconds left to give Floyd a 20-6 lead.
Goins opened the second quarter with a basket, with Avancini hitting a three and Brandy Phillips making two free throws. After a free throw by Goins, Brown hit a jumper, Avancini made a three and two free throws, and Amber Quesenberry got a basket for a 34-16 lead.
Emily Thompson hit a jumper, Quesenberry got a basket, Nicole Snead made a free throw, and Quesenberry hit a three to give Floyd a 42-21 halftime lead.
The Buffaloes outscored the Cavs 19-7 in the third quarter. Bourne opened with a jumper, Phillips hit from the baseline, Brown made three of four free throw attempts, Hartman made a free throw, L. Thompson hit a three, Bolt made a rebound basket, and E. Thompson and L. Thompson made three pointers for a 61-28 lead.
Goins opened the fourth with a baseline jumper, and after a jumper by Snead, hit a three-pointer to make it 63-33.
Marissa Bowman converted a three-point play, Avancini scored on a length of the court drive, Bowman and Snead hit three-pointers, Telena Hollandsworth and Snead hit jumpers, and McAlexander made a free throw to complete the Floyd scoring.
