Girls advance to final four

The Lady Buffs are Richmond Bound after winning a state quarterfinal at Christiansburg Saturday. Floyd County advanced to the Group A girls’ basketball Final Four with an 86-55 win over Honaker.
“We really picked up the intensity,” said coach Alan Cantrell. “We had a good practice this week, with some of the guys coming in to scrimmage.
“We shot the ball well and passed well. We were looking for the open team mate.”
The Tigers took their only lead of the game when Taylr Perkins got a rebound basket. Honaker went seven minutes before getting another field goal.
Floyd took the lead for good as Molly Brown hit from the baseline, Carmen Bolt completed a three point play, Brittany Avancini drove the court for a basket, and Brandy Phillips hit a jumper. Jaimie McGlothlin made two free throws, with Brittany Bourne hitting a pull up jumper for the Buffs.
Rachel Artrip made two free throws, then Avancini hit from the baseline, Brown hit a jumper, and Avancini made four free throws in five seconds for a 19-6 lead. Perkins got a basket with 20 seconds left, and Brown hit a jumper with one second remaining for a 21-8 lead.
Floyd opened the second on a 12-0 run. Brown made two free throws, Avancini scored on a give and go, Bolt made a lay in, Phillips made a free throw, Brown hit a jumper, and Bourne hit a three for a 33-8 lead. Artrip made a free throw, then Brown hit from the baseline and Bourne made a free throw for a 36-9 lead.
Nicole Roman got a jumper for Honaker, then Floyd went up 43-17 as Avancini made a runner, Nicole Snead hit from the baseline and Phillips made a three pointer. The Tigers closed on a 9-2 run as Artrip got a lay up and a free throw, Hannah Bostic had two lay ins and Artrip scored on a drive. A pair of free throws by Brown helped Floyd to a 45-25 halftime lead.
Avancini opened the third with a jumper, with Perkins getting a basket for Honaker. A jumper by Phillips and two Avancini free throws put the lead at 24.
The Tigers scored eight straight on a basket by Artrip, a three point play by McGlothlin and a three by Roman to get within 51-35. Floyd had an 18-5 edge for the last 4:17 as Brown made two free throws, Avancini hit a three, Brown scored on a break, Avancini scored on a steal and a three pointer, Phillips hit from the baseline and Marissa Bowman made two free throws with 13 seconds left for a 67-40 lead.
Artrip opened the fourth with a pair of free throws, but Floyd pushed the lead to 30 as Brown hit from the baseline, Bourne scored on a steal and an inbounds play, Brown and Avancini made free throws and Phillips hit from the baseline to make it 77-47.
For the rest of the game Phillips made a free throw, Snead hit a jumper, Kayla Hartman made a free throw, Snead made two free throws, Bowman made one free throw, and Telena Hollandsworth hit a jumper with eight seconds left.
