Giles beats Floyd 35-20

In the Three Rivers District game of the year, Giles beat Floyd 35-20 at Pearisburg Monday night. The game was rescheduled after being rained out Friday.
The win gives the Spartans a 3-0 record and inside track on the district championship.
The level of play lived up to the occasion, as the Buffaloes had a chance to tie the game with a two point PAT early in the fourth quarter. The attempt failed and Giles got two fourth quarter touchdowns to close out the game.
Giles took the opening kickoff and picked up one first down before having to punt. Floyd started at the 38 and on the first play, Luke Harris hit Kaleb Gallimore with a 17 yard screen pass.
The drive stalled, and Kent Moles punted to the 11. Floyd’s defense forces a three and out.
Travis Bolt returned the short punt 32 yards to the 13. On third and 11, Harris hit Bolt with a pass in the flat and Bolt went 14 yards for a touchdown. The Nathan Weiss PAT made it 7-0 at 2:39.
The Spartans answered 62 seconds later. On second and seven, Sheldon Douthat found Cody Journell behind the defense for a 61 yard touchdown pass. Journell kicked the PAT and the game was tied 7-7 at 1:37.
Floyd went three and out as the quarter ended. Giles had a second quarter drive that got to the Floyd four. The Buff defense forced the Spartans to try a feidl goal and Journell hit from 22 yards to put Giles up 10-7 at 6:05.
The Buffs started the next drive at the 20. On second and 13, Harris hit Brett Holman with a wide screen that went 69 yards to the Spartan 14.
Again, on second and 13, Harris hit Bolt with a 12 yard pass to the five. Harris carried it in from there. The PAT kick from Weiss made it 14-10 at 3:36.
Giles answered with a scoring drive, picking up three first downs. Hunter Williams ran 14 yards for the touchdown. Floyd stopped the PAT run and Giles’ 16-14 lead at 1:09 held into halftime.
Each team had one third quarter drive. Floyd picked up two first downs before punting at 7:02. The Spartans kept the ball the rest of the third.
On fourth and four on the first play of the fourth, Giles got a first down on a pass interference penalty. Three plays later, Douthat scored on a two yard run. A bad snap stopped the PAT and Giles led 22-14 at 10:29.
Floyd needed only one play to answer. Harris hit Kent Moles on a wide screen to the right, and Moles ran between two defenders, got to the center of the field and outsprinted the Spartans for an 80 yard touchdown. Floyd missed on the PAT pass and trailed 22-20 at 10:19.
The Spartans came back with a ground game that ate up almost six minutes. On fourth and goal at the four, Douthat ran it in. Journell kicked the PAT and Giles led 29-20 at 4:28.
Floyd got one first down. But on fourth down, Harris was sacked and Giles got the ball back at the 20 with 2:09 left. Douthat ran three times, getting two yards for the score on the third run. The PAT run failed and Giles was up 35-20 with 1:06 left.
