Even though George Wythe was without the services of Devin Smith, who has the highest three point shooting percentage on the team, due to recovering from a cold, the Maroons teamed up to combine for a total of 10 three-pointers to crush the Rebels 95-46 Friday night in Glade Spring.
Patrick Henry honored their senior basketball players and cheerleaders before the game, but it was Maroon seniors Ethan Mills, Tennis Simon and Brandon Davis who stole the show with so many precision no-look passes that fans looked like they were watching a tennis match. Mills set the bar high in the first quarter scoring 12 of his game high 21 points, including two from behind the arc.
George Wythe has been criticized for not having a big post presence, but with Simon patrolling the paint, that hasn’t been a problem. If he isn’t bringing the crowd to their feet with his two handed dunks, then he is intimidating opposing teams by pinning their layups against the backboard.
Mills, Davis and Simon combined for 24 of the 30 GW points in the first quarter alone. The Maroons had Mills, Davis, Brett Grimes, Kenneth Waugh, Tristan Boysaw, Simon, Will Sawyers and Drew Lester all score points in the second quarter to take a 61-29 lead at halftime.
The Maroon teamwork continued in the third quarter as Waleed Ershad, Grimes and Boysaw all picked up layups off assists from Mills and Davis.
Not long into the third quarter, George Wythe had replaced its starters with reserves, who showed that they could play pressure defense and hit open shots too.
Waugh led the way for the reserve players by scoring 13 points, including 3three 3-pointers. Scoring in double figures for George Wythe were Mills (21), Simon (17), Waugh (13), Grimes (11) and Davis (10) as they came one point from another 50 point plus victory.
For those basketball fans that have not been out to see the Maroons play this year, they face Chilhowie, who should finish second in the Hogoheegee district, at home tonight.
GW destroyed the Warriors in their first contest, but Chilhowie has developed a reputation of making it a personal challenge to knock off the always talented Maroon teams.
