Local supervisors accepted a check from the Library Building Fund committee Monday. The check represented the final payment from the Fund for the new addition to the Jessie Peterman Memorial Library.
The committee was tasked with raising $300,000 for the project, but actually brought in $600,000 in contributions. The committee ended up giving $323,422.40 to the county, reported Fund treasurer Mary Beth Lanier. Susan Icove, a Floyd resident, spearheaded the fund drive. Committee members include Lanier, Tom Hensley, Olin Griffin, Betty Lineberry, Pamela Cadmus, Bill Gardner, and Dale Profitt.
Also donating to the cause were the Friends of the Library, which held events to raise money.
Lanier said everyone involved with the effort greatly appreciated the generosity of the citizens of Floyd County, who wanted the library addition, and then came forth and helped to pay for it.
The extra money raised by the Fund went to the expense of reroofing the library building, painting, new signage, shelving, furniture, computers, new parking lot lights, and a handicap accessible door.
Individuals in the community have also donated their services as a part of the effort. Still being completed is the new genealogy room, housed in the former community room. Several people and businesses are contributing elements to that room. When completed, the Floyd County Historical Society will be assisting with displays.
Lanier said many donors expressed an interest in the genealogy room during the fund drive. Researchers are anxiously awaiting its completion.
