The Fort Chiswell Lady Pioneers made short work of the Giles Lady Spartans 78-29 in a non-district girls’ basketball game played Monday night at the Fort.
FC Coach Kristen Williams had the Lady Pioneers primed and ready for their first game of the season. FC gave a team effort with Kendra Vaughan having the game-high 20 points and added eight steals; Christina Shockley scored 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for a double-double; Nancy Thacker also had a double-double as she scored 19 points and recorded 11 steals.
As a team, the Lady Pioneers played excellent defense as they had 25 steals and held Giles to nine field goals.
The first quarter was all FC as Paige Quesenberry and Carlyta Hamm scored four points each. Thacker, Shockley and Ashley Ratcliff added hoops for FC, while Kelsey Frazier hit a pair of free throws for the Lady Spartans.
Giles didn’t fare any better in the second eight minutes as Cassie Martin hit a free throw and Frazier added a bucket for Giles’ only points of the period.
Meanwhile, Laken Arnold, Kelly Thomas and Ratcliff gave FC a 34-5 lead at the half.
The girls from the Fort added to their lead in the third quarter as Thacker popped in eight points, and Vaughan added a pair of buckets and a pair of free throws.
Rachel Smith, Martin, Lindsey Jackson and Frazier scored for Giles, but Quesenberry and Shockley added points for FC as the Fort led 52-17 after three.
Giles continued to play hard as Jackson hit a three and received scoring help from Leigh Kauffelt, Frazier and Chesley Gibson.
Vaughan and Shockley then did their thing as the duo teamed for 18 points. Quesenberry added a bucket and Hamm added a pair of baskets as the Lady Pioneers closed out their opening season win.
