An investigation is continuing into an accident in Fairlawn Sunday that left a motorcycle rider from Floyd County dead.
According to State Police, the accident happened around 7:40 p.m. one-tenth mile from the intersection of Route 11 and Route 114. Shawn Brent Gerald, 28, of Sutphin Road in Willis, was on a 2003 Honda CBR.
Gerald and another vehicle, believed to be a Ford Mustang, were at a stop light. When the light changed, “both accelerated at a high rate of speed,” said Trooper Mike Honaker.
Gerald’s motorcycle struck the side of a 2004 Hyundai Sonata, driven by Jerry Wayne Viars of Max Meadows. Viars was northbound on Route 11 when he attempted to make a left turn on to Round House Road and pulled into the path of the motorcycle.
The Mustang left the scene without stopping after the accident. Viars suffered minor injuries and was arrested for DUI.
Honaker said police “have received several phone calls providing leads, which we are following up around the clock.” Anyone with information is asked to call 540-643-2560.
