Floyd wins Dixie District baseball

Despite falling into the consolation bracket after one game, Floyd County won the Dixie Major District championship at Carroll County and advanced to the state tournament this week at Independence.
On Saturday, July 5, Floyd lost to Carroll County National 16-6. Floyd fell behind 6-0 in the second inning. Floyd got four runs in the third and cut the margin to 12-6 in the fourth.
On Sunday, July 6, in the first elimination game, Floyd beat Wythe West 4-1. In the first inning Bake Dalton singled and Ryan Lewis walked.
Bryan Callahan advanced the runners, and they scored on a triple by Vinnie Kuchenbuch to make it 2-0. Wythe got its run in the fourth.
Nathan Palmer and James Board scored in the fifth. On the mound, Callahan, Matt Bary, Zac Akers and Lewis combined for 14 strikeouts.
Floyd beat Carroll County American 8-4 Monday, July 7.Ryan Lewis singled and Nathan Palmer singled him in for a 1-0 start in the first inning.
Floyd got two runs in the fifth as Matt Bary and Alden Higgs scored to make it 3-0. Carroll County got three runs in fifth to tie the game.
Carroll got the game winning run on third base in the sixth but Lewis struck out the final batter, sending the game into extra innings.
In the seventh Blake Dalton walked. With two outs, Floyd got five runs.
Kerry Martin tripled to bring in Dalton and Vinnie Kuchenbuch. Bryan Callahan doubled to left to bring in Martin.
Ryan Lewis followed with a double to score Callahan and Matt Bary singled to bring in Lewis to put Floyd up 8-3. Carroll got one more run, but the Buffaloes advanced.
On Tuesday, July 8, after a rain delay, Floyd knocked off undefeated Wythe East 10-5. Wythe took a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Zac Akers scored on an infield error to make it 2-1.
In the bottom of the second, Matt Bary, Wyatt Gearhart and Jonathan Palmer drew consecutive walks to load the bases. With one out, James Board and Nathan Palmer singled to get three runs in.
Kuchenbuch singled to score Board and N. Palmer to put Floyd up 6-2. After a 1-2-3 inning by Wythe, Floyd added four more runs.
Ryan Lewis reached on an error, Matt Bary was hit by a pitch, Wyatt Gearhart singled, Nathan Palmer singled and each scored to make it 10-2. Wythe got three runs in the sixth for the final margin.
That left three teams in the tournament with one loss. Floyd drew the bye, and Carroll National beat Wythe 4-1 to set up one final game.
After allowing 16 runs and losing by slaugher rule in the tournament opener, Floyd defeated Carroll 2-1 in the championship finals.
Carroll got two base runners in the first inning, but both were thrown out trying to steal. Lewis struck out three Carroll batters in the second.
Floyd got two base runners in the third but failed to score. Carroll loaded the bases in the fourth but Lewis got a strikeout to end the inning.
Zac Akers walked and advanced twice on passed balls. With two out, the shortstop mishandled a shot by Callahan and Akers scored to make it 1-0.
Lewis pitched out of another jam in the fifth, stranding runners at second and third. Carroll tied the game 1-1 in the sixth.
In Floyd’s half of the inning, Vinnie Kuchenbuch singled and scored the tournament’s winning run on a hard shot by Callahan.
