ELIZABETH ANN ALLEN
HAYMARKET-Elizabeth Ann Allen (Liz) 69, died on Thursday, July 10, 2008 at Georgetown University Hospital, WDC. Those left to cherish her memories are her son, Leonard J. (Diane) Allen; grandchildren, Shawlene and Leonard III of Fredericksburg; daughter, Lynne A. (Kevin) Lewis; granddaughters, Shannon, and Kaelyn of Haymarket; her former husband Leonard J. Allen Sr. of Arlington; brothers, Harris (Lois) Lemons of Floyd, June (Miyako) Lemons of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, John (Joyce) Lemon of Clinton, Maryland; sisters, Corinne (Al) Austin of Piscataway, New Jersey, Mayday (OJ) Gray of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Clarice Lemons of Arlington; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Memorial services will be held July 19, at 11:00 a.m. at Mt. Zion Christian Church Disciples of Christ, 115 Scales Road, Floyd. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to an Educational Fund established for the grandchildren of Elizabeth A. Allen. Donations can be sent to: P.O. MARY EDITH QUESENBERRY ENGLISH
INDIAN VALLEY-Mary Edith Quesenberry English, 83, Passed away on July 8, 2008.
Survivors include: two daughters and sons-in-law, Agnes and Michael Ramey, Nancy and Eunice Harris; sister, Geneva Foutz; brother, Harless Quesenberry; many loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, friends, and extended family.
Visitation was held from 6-7 p.m. on Friday, July 11 with the funeral following at 7 p.m. at Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Vinton Quesenberry officiating. Interment was at 10 a.m. Saturday at Big Sand Cemetery.
JB GOAD
WILLIS - JB Goad, 75,was lifted into God’s embrace on Saturday, July 12, 2008 after a long fought cancer battle. JB was born October 30, 1932 to William Charlie Goad and Della Ousley Goad who preceded him into God’s care.
Surviving him are: brothers, Gerald Hubert Goad of Willis, and Hanford Leo and Pauline Goad of Indian Valley; daughter, Betty Goad Aikens and husband Charles of Allisonia; granddaughter, Michelle Sartin Newman and husband Berlin “Randy” of Willis; and extended family.
Also very dear to his heart and left behind are great grandchildren Contessa R. Newman and Berlin R. Newman Jr., friends Bill Underwood and Dorothy Smith and their grandchildren Brittany and Megan. He is also survived by two nieces and their families.
He was a member of Willis Baptist Church and a simple hard working farmer and sawmill owner. He will be remembered as a devoted father and family man and a friend who went out of his way to help others. He will be greatly missed by many.
Graveside service was held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at the Cox Cemetery, Dugspur, with Pastor Joseph P. Cox officiating. Maberry Funeral Home, Floyd, handled arrangements.
EULA ELLEN MIDKIFF
FLOYD-Eula Ellen Midkiff, 67, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, July 9, 2008 following a courageous year long battle with brain cancer. She died peacefully at home surrounded by her family. Eula Ellen was born in Floyd on September 28, 1940, and was the daughter of the late James Edgar and Glennis Duncan DeHart. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Lee Midkiff. Known as a mama, grandma, memaw, and sissy, she was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother, as well as a trusted friend and companion to many. Her list of close friends is far too long to acknowledge. She touched many lives during her lifetime, especially as a caregiver to over 130 children during her 34 years of home daycare. She provided a loving, safe environment for each child, treating them individually with nurturing love and guidance. In addition, she was a longtime, faithful member of Floyd Baptist Church where she took particular joy in the loving fellowship within her Sunday School class.
Left to cherish many wonderful memories are three sons and daughters-in-law, Randal and Diane Midkiff, Ronnie and Joyce Midkiff, and Larry and Jennifer Midkiff, all of Floyd; one daughter and son-in-law, Stacy and Bryant Thompson, Floyd; four handsome grandsons in which she took much pride, Jeremy Midkiff, London, England; Bradley Midkiff, Bryce Thompson, and Brent Thompson, all of Floyd; one sister and brother-in-law, Connie and Reif Bond, Indian Valley; two sisters-in-law, Barbara Testerman and husband Mike, Hillsville; Maggie Shelton and husband Herbert, Salem; two nephews, Chris Bond and wife, Kim, and Kenny Shelton; three nieces, Lisa Bolt and husband, William, Sheena Quesenberry and husband Brandon, Darlene Wolfe and husband Rick; six great-nieces and great nephews, Alena and Ryne Bond, Laila Bolt, Carli and Tanner Quesenberry, and Jake Shelton; one uncle, Charles Duncan and wife, Shirley; a special cousin, Bonnie Wray, and a devoted caregiver, Delta Sowers. The family is thankful for her sister, Connie, who took care of mama. Special thanks to Carilion Hospice of New River Valley as well as everyone for the many acts of kindness and the tremendous outpouring of support during her illness. Funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 12, at Gardner Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Davis Holladay officiating. Interment followed at Jacksonville Cemetery. LEONARD ARDIS PACK
ARARAT – Leonard Ardis Pack, age 74, died on Friday, July 11, 2008 at his home. He was born in Patrick County on June 20, 1934 to the late Ab and Emma Bowman Pack. In addition to his parents, Mr. Pack was preceded in death by: one sister, Virginia “Sis” Pack; and two brothers, Carl and Straud Pack. He had been employed as a bulldozer operator for Jimmy Lynch, and attended True Gospel Baptist Church.
Mr. Pack is survived by: son and daughter-in-law, Bobby Lee and Lycresha Pack of Floyd; daughter, Susan Emma Pack of Meadows of Dan; two grandchildren, Kindra Dawn Pack and James Leonard Cole Pack; three sisters, Barbara P. Dalton of Stuart, Roena P. Goins of Mount Airy, North Carolina and Ila P. Arnder of Ararat; brothers, Ernest Pack and Lloyd Pack, both of Claudville; and special friends, Dorothy Duncan and Daniel Handy.
Funeral service was held Wednesday, July 16, at 2:00 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Rev. J.R. Officiating. Burial followed in the Pack Family Cemetery. Online condolences may be sent by visiting http://www.moodyfuneralservices.com.
JAMES TAZEWELL SOWERS
CHRISTIANSBURG-James Tazewell Sowers, 100, passed away Saturday, July 12, 2008. He was preceded in death by his wife Beulah Slusher Sowers.
He is survived by: daughter, Kathryn S. Stewart, Hendersonville, TN; grandsons, Christopher Stewart, of Goodyear, AZ, Timothy Stewart, of Apopka, FL; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ilene Boucher, of Belleville, IL, Frances Profitt, of Floyd; brother, Edmond Sowers, of MO; and special friend, Eva Sutphin, of Christiansburg.
Funeral service was held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 15, at The Christiansburg Church of the Brethren with Rev. Donald Peters and Rev. Wallace Yopp officiating.
Interment followed in Jacksonville Cemetery, Floyd. Arrangements were handled by Gardner Funeral Home, Floyd.
