The varsity football team ran its record to 5-0 with a 21-14 win at Tunstall Monday. It was the team’s third straight road victory and the first ever appearance at the rural Pittsylvania County school.
Tunstall took the opening kickoff and gave the ball up on downs when a fourth-and-one run came up inches short at the Buffalo 45.
Zach Bonham ran for nine yards. After a holding penalty set up third and 11, Luke Harris hit Brett Holman with a 16 yard pass to the 30.
Three plays later, on third and five, Harris hit Holman with a short pass and Holman made several nice moves to turn the play into a 25 yard touchdown. Nathan Weiss kicked the PAT and Floyd led 7-0 at 6:46.
The Buff defense forced a three and out. Matt Link ran for eight and Bonham for five for one first down before Floyd had to punt.
The Buff defense forced another three and out and the Buffs got the ball back at midfield in the closing seconds of the first quarter.
Early in the second, on third and ten, Harris hit Holman with a 14 yard pass to the 36. Bonham carried four times, for 14, nine, six and then from the seven to get into the end zone for a touchdown. The Weiss PAT kick made it 14-0 at 9:25.
The Trojans finally got a first down midway through the second on an 11 yard draw by JaQuan Hubbard, but Tunstall couldn’t sustain the drive and punted.
Floyd started the next drive at the 44. Harris hit Craig Slavicek with an 18 yard pass, and on fourth and eight, Harris scrambled 24 yards to the 12.
A sack brought up third and 20, but Harris hit Holman with a screen and Michael Lancianese got a good downfield block and Harris went 22 yards for his second touchdown. The Weiss PAT kick made it 21-0 with 2:00 left.
The Trojans picked up one first down on a 16 yard pass from Hubbard to C.J. McGloghlin, but time ran out on Tunstall at midfield.
Floyd started the third quarter at the 35 after the Trojans’ kickoff went out of bounds. On third and 13, Matt Wilson picked off a Harris pass and returned it 26 yards to the 19.
Four plays later Tae Gunter scored on a four yard run. Drake Slusher blocked the PAT kick and Floyd led 21-6 at 8:23.
The Buffs looked ready to answer on the following drive. But Harris completed a pass to Slavicek who fumbled trying to gain extra yards and Wilson recovered and got the ball to the Floyd 45.
Two plays later, Hubbard fumbled and Cole Peters recovered at the Trojans 43. The Buffs got one first down before giving the ball up on downs at the 27.
Dustin Williams ran for eight and on the next play, undersized Cameron Scates broke up the middle and sprinted 65 yards for a touchdown. Hubbard ran the PAT and Tunstall was within 21-14 at 2;11.
The Trojans momentum continued, when on a third and 12 for Floyd, Hubbard went high to intercept a Harris pass and give Tunstall the ball at the Floyd 40.
The Trojans moved to the Floyd 28 early in the fourth, but Ethan Griffith intercepted a Hubbard pass and returned it to the 40.
Floyd had a three and out and punted. Peters did a good job of reversing the field, with a 45 yard punt inside the ten.
But an illegal substitution penalty forced the Buffs to punt again, and the punt went only 11 yards, and Tunstall gained 39 yards of field position at the 48.
The Trojans moved to the Floyd 37. On fourth and six, Peters batted down the Hubbard pass and the Buffs took over on downs with 3:07 left.
Bonham ran for six and four, and then eight and two to move the chains twice. Then Harris was able to take a knee twice and kill the clock.
