A fire along the Norfolk Southern train tracks in the Gunton Park community was quickly contained Wednesday afternoon by the Max Meadows Volunteer Fire Department.
Pete Haislip, one of the responding firefighters, said the fire broke out a little after 2:30 p.m. just east of the Gunton Park Road and Pepper’s Ferry Road intersection.
In a phone interview Thursday afternoon, Haislip said the cause of the fire was undetermined. He added, though, that Norfolk Southern workers had been repairing the tracks and that a spark from the maintenance work was a possible cause of the blaze.
Haislip characterized the incident as a “small brush fire” and said the total burnt area was less than an acre.
The fire department got control of the blaze by 3 p.m. and left the scene at around 4:30 p.m.
