RICHLANDS - The new field house being constructed at Richlands High School will bear the name of a long time Blue Tornado supporter.
At its Nov. 12 meeting the Tazewell County School Board approved a request to name the field house for Dr. James McVey, who has served as team physician for more than 40 years. Gene Hearl, chairman of the field house committee and RHS Principal Karen Webb brought the request to the board.
Hearl said the committee unanimously endorsed naming the facility for McVey. He said McVey had been very active in civic affairs for years and worked on many projects to help young people in addition to serving as team doctor.
Board Member Steve Davis said he echoed Hearl’s feelings and moved that the request be honored. Cookie Johnson, who represents the eastern district, said she had gotten to know McVey over the years and had the highest regard for him.
Johnson seconded Davis’s motion that building be named the Dr. James McVey Field House. The motion was approved unanimously.
The field house is currently under construction and is expected to be finished later this year. The committee will hold a formal ceremony when it is completed.
