The Fort Chiswell Lady Pioneer basketball team played host to Pocahontas Friday night in a Mountain Empire District contest.
FC Coach Kristen Williams’ ladies jumped out to a 30-0 first quarter lead and coasted to the 72-23 win.
Kendra Vaughan led all scorers with 23 points, while FC’s Paige Quesenberry and Nancy Thacker added 13 and 12 points apiece. Carlyta Hamm led FC in rebounding with nine, while Brittany Pinnix added seven.
FC took control in the first period from the start as Vaughan, Thacker and Quesenberry combined to put FC on top 15-0. Amanda Montgomery swished a jumper, Laken Arnold hit a free toss, and Hamm added another to push the lead to 19-0.
Jessica Thomas hit from inside and Vaughan hit nine unanswered for the 30-0 lead after a quarter.
Julie Fitzgerald got the Lady Indians on track in the second quarter as she had a free throw, nailed a jumper and hit a trey. The Lady Pioneers replied as Montgomery, Pinnix, Hamm and Vaughan extended the Fort’s lead. Kaylee Sanifer and Keshia Johnson teamed for six points for Poky as the Fort led 39-12 at the half.
FC extended its lead in the third quarter as Arnold, Quesenberry, Thacker and Vaughan teamed for 16 points. Brittany Baker and Camilla Edwards hit hoops for the Lady Indians as FC led 55-16 with a quarter to play.
In the final eight minutes, Arnold, Hamm, Montgomery, Thacker, Quesenberry, Pinnix and Vaughan scored for FC. Baker Edwards, and Sanifer scored for Poky took the win.
Vaughan, who has been on a tear of late, has hit 20 of 21 free throws and is playing exceptional defense. Last week against Narrows, she hit seven 3-pointers which ties her for 10th best in the state of Virginia.
