TAZEWELL – A preliminary hearing for a Boissevain man charged with murder has been delayed while he undergoes psychological evaluation.
District Judge Jack S. “Chip’ Hurley ordered that Paul Daniel Jarrett, 70 be sent to Central State Hospital for evaluation. Defense Attorney Fred Harman’s motion asks that Jarrett be evaluated for competency to stand trial and sanity at the time of the offense.
Jarrett is charged with murder and malicious wounding in the death of Charles Allen Proffitt and the wounding of his wife Tammy Proffitt. The case was scheduled for preliminary hearing Aug. 24.
The incident occurred July 8 and Charles Proffitt was shot nine times with a 38 caliber revolver. Tammy Proffitt was shot one time in the shoulder. Jarrett was arrested at the scene and was being held in the Southwest Regional Jail in Tazewell prior to his transfer to Central State.
Commonwealth’s Attorney Dennis Lee said the case would be rescheduled after the evaluation of Jarrett is completed.
