Barack Obama made history when he won the Presidential Election Tuesday, becoming the first African-American in history to win the office. Virginia followed the national trend, voting Democratic in a Presidential election for the first time since 1964. Floyd County bucked those trends, going for Republican John McCain by a 59-39 percent margin. McCain carried each precinct, by margins ranging from 55 to 67 percent. Turnout for each precinct was over 66 percent, with 75 percent of the 10,098 registered voters turning out.
Floyd followed the state trend in voting in the U.S. Senate race, picking Democrat Mark Warner over Republican Jim Gilmore 62-36 for the open seat of retiring Senator John Warner. Incumbent Democrat Rick Boucher was unopposed in winning his 13th term to the House of Representatives 9th District.
