The eighth grade football team failed to punch in a score in the closing seconds and ended up with a 6-6 tie against Radford at Floyd Thursday, September 18.
The Buffaloes opened the game with a long scoring drive. The key play in the drive was a 34 yard run by Ryan Yates on fourth and two that put the ball on the Bobcat 25.
Brent Webster had a nine yard run to the nine. On fourth and goal at the four, Gus Underwood hit Tyler Vaught with a touchdown pass. The PAT failed and Floyd led 6-0 at 2:48.
The Bobcats got inside the Floyd 10 twice in the second quarter. Radford had a drive to the two but the Buffalo defense got the ball back on downs.
Floyd seemed to get out of trouble when Yovany Alegria had a seven yard carry to the 13 and Underwood ran 14 more to the 27. But a fumble at the 20 was recovered by Radford.
The Cats tied the game when Hunter Marshall scored on a 12-yard run. The PAT missed and it was 6-6 at 3:01.
Radford drove for a go ahead scored late in the third, but Ricky Martin recovered a fumble at the 15 with 2:57 left in the third. From there Floyd put together an impressive drive, keeping the ball over 10 minutes.
The Buffaloes picked up seven first downs. Underwood hit Yates with a nine yard pass and on third and eight, hit Vaught with a 10 yarder.
Yates had first down runs of ten and five, Alegria got a first down on a six yard carry to the 14, and Yates converted a fourth and three with a three yard carry to the four with 15 seconds left.
But from there Floyd had an incompletion and fumbled the ball with four seconds left. Radford’s only play of the fourth quarter was an incompletion as time expired.
The Buffaloes play another district game tonight at Giles.
