The lead was no place to be on Saturday night during the Carolina Clash Super Late Model Series race on the high banked, half mile dirt super speedway of Wythe Raceway.
First, Dennis “Rambo” Franklin of Gaffney, S.C., broke his rear end housing and slammed into the turn four wall while leading the race, Ricky Weeks of Rutherfordton, N.C., who won the first visit of the Carolina Clash earlier this year, before heading to the pits while running second. Then Damon Eller of Crumpler, N.C., took the lead and held it until his engine began to miss, handing the lead to eventual race winner, Billy Hicks of Mount Airy, N.C.
Another top five runner, Brandon Kinzer of Allen, Ky. had a good night turn bad when he fell out on lap 37. Hicks took over the lead on lap 35 when Eller’s engine went sour, he led track regular, Kerry Jones of Bristol, Tenn., who was running a Scott Bloomquist chassis, to the finish. Weeks, who pitted first on lap 26 and again on lap 32, but returned and restarted at the rear of the field and came up to finish third. Carolina Clash Series “Rookie of the Year” candidate, Brent Robinson of Smithfield finished fourth with Saluda, S.C., driver, Deano Long completing the top five.
Rounding out the top 10 finishers was local favorite, Barry Arnold of Max Meadows, 2006 Super Late Model track champion, Jimmy McCormick of Dobson, N.C., Shane Roberts of Blountville, Tenn., Doug Sanders of McAdenville, N.C., and Bowdine Massingale of Jacksonville, Fla.
Kenny Peeples Jr. of Rural Retreat was back on his game following last week’s flat tire that cost him the $1,000 bonus in the Exit 54 Exxon Road to the Nationals. Peeples ran in third position early as Phil Gann of Mayodan, N.C., started third, but took the lead from front row starters Brandon Umberger of Rural Retreat and Clinton Cook of Radford on the first lap and held the position until lap 14 when, Peeples, after discarding of Umberger, got by Gann for the lead.
Umberger also got around Gann for position taking the second position in the final rundown leaving him one point behind Peeples in the chase for the Exit 54 Exxon Late Model championship. Gann lost the third position to Randy Taylor of Troutdale on the final lap, putting him fourth in the final rundown. Jason Lawrence of Pilot finished fifth after three straight second place finishes. Completing the top 10 finishers was John King, Jr. of Kingsport, Tenn., David Watts of Buchanan, Chase McCormick of Dobson and Scott and Trevor Agee of Christiansburg.
2006 FASTRAK Champions Series Modified National Champion, Ron Lawson of Austinville took the victory in the Dirt Modified Division over Abingdon driver, Willie Gibson. RK Dix of Rural Retreat, Duke Bare of Meadowview and Roby Orr of Glade Spring rounded out the top five finishers. Completing the top 10 was Mike Johnson and Taylor Hayes both of Marion, Fred Riley of Rural Retreat, Michael Davis of Atkins and Justin Blevins of Marion.
Michelle McMahan of Marion looked to be on her way to victory lane, leading the first four laps of the Hornet feature, but Trevor Cregger of Christiansburg had his car on a rail and took the lead never looking back en route to another victory.
Cole Dutton of Chilhowie followed Cregger to the finish line with Cody Umberger of Rural Retreat finishing third after starting at the rear of the field. Pie Short of Abingdon finished fourth with Jay Cox of Rural Retreat finishing fifth with Dakota Wilson of Rural Retreat, Morgan Widener of Marion, DJ Black of Sophia, W.Va., Jon Keyes of Sugar Grove and Clark Cooper of Rural Retreat rounding out the top 10.
Duke Bare of Meadowview and Doug Monday of Max Meadows returned to front running form taking the top two positions in the finishing order. Jason Powers of Marion led the first 10 laps with Bare then taking the lead with Monday right on his rear bumper all the way in the caution free Smith’s Auto Repair Pro-Mini race. Monday finished second with Mount Airy driver, Luke Golding finishing third ahead of Powers and last week’s winner, Gary Rudolph of Fries. Completing the top 10 was Tim Robinson of Marion and Brandon Farris of Marion, JR Davis of Wytheville, Andy Jolliffe of Chilhowie and Danny Bland of Glade Spring.
One week after his post race altercation with a fellow England Automotive Super Street driver, Daniel Moss of Elk Creek returned to victory lane leading from the drop of the green flag all the way to the checkered flag flew. While Moss was out front dominating the race, Keith Griffitts of Sugar Grove, Brian Coake of Max Meadows and Teddy Tate of Rural Retreat all had flat tires and hit the pits to change tires. Mike Keith finished second while Coake returned to finish third, with Griffitts fourth and Tate rounded out the top five. Dustin McNeill of West Jefferson, N.C., Sammy Lawence of Barren Springs, Michael Hedrick of Wytheville, Steven Quillen of Marion and Michael Deskins of Tazewell completed the top 10 finishers in the England Automotive Super Street Division.
Leon McMahan of Marion led the first two laps of the U-Car feature, but Jake Eaton of Bland had other plans with his Unique Construction Chevrolet Cavalier out front and dominated the feature race. McMahan raced side by side with Rob Favre of Willis for much of the race and held on for a second place finish. Favre would finish third with Tim Widener of Marion and Donald Wilson of Rural Retreat completing the top five finishers.
Racing continues this Saturday night, August 18. It is Ladies Night at Wythe Raceway with the first 3,000 ladies being admitted free into the grandstands with racing in the following divisions: Exit 54 Exxon Late Models, England Automotive Super Street, Smith’s Auto Repair Pro-Minis, Dirt Modifieds, Hornets and U-Cars.
