First Career Win For Baggerly!

The summer air is heating up as we close in on the mid point of the season at the 1/2 high-banked super speedway. The racing is more competitive each week as several drivers are claiming their first career victory.
The upcoming weeks will present an array of attractions for fans. Saturday will be the annual Wythe Raceway fireworks show and racing in six divisions. The scenic setting of Wythe Raceway gives fans an excellent view of the races but when the fireworks begin, it becomes spectacular as the sky is filled with colors.
The Berglund Performance Parts Late Models saw its fourth driver claim his first career feature win. Rural Retreat’s Daniel Baggerly qualified first for the 25 lap feature. The 17 year old led every lap en route to his victory. Matt Parks of Wytheville was right behind him every step of the way and pulled up beside Baggerly several times.
Baggerly held the high line, which kept the momentum up. Parks was making a very strong run with two to go when he spun to avoid contact with a lapped car coming through traffic off turn four. This allowed Mayodan, N.C., driver Phil Gann to move up to second. Clinton Cook of Radford followed in third. With Baggerly taking the win the streak of “Young Gun” winners continues.
When the Cook’s Clean Center Super Street Division takes to the track only one thing comes to mind, WOW! Week in and week out these drivers put on an impressive display of driving. Three wide down the back stretch, side by side an inch apart through the turns, and even four wide at times.
Jimmy Tate of Wytheville revisited victory lane Saturday night after a hard fought battle with Keith Griffitts of Sugar Grove and Mike Keith of Rural Retreat. When they crossed the finish line they were nose to tail. Wytheville’s Chad Hale and Eddie Bentley, Sugar Grove were fourth and fifth.
The B & R Tire 200 saw the Pro Mini’s Twin races; each consisted of 14 laps. Doug Monday of Max Meadows went back to victory lane. Monday is also the current points leader in the division. Gary Rudolph of Fries came home in second place with Randy Kincer, Rural Retreat, close behind.
By winning the first Pro Mini feature, Monday was in line for the $100 bonus if he could win this race also. However Jason Powers of Marion had other ideas and won the second feature. Powers is not a stranger to victory lane but has not been there in a few years. Powers held off the charges of Rural Retreat’s R.K. Dix and Monday.
Michael Davis of Atkins picked up another win in the Open Wheel Modifieds. Taylor Hayes of Chilhowie jumped out to an early lead, but spun in turn one, which put Davis in the lead. Davis cruised to victory from there.
Ron Lawson, Austinville, and R.K. Dix fought side by side for second. Lawson prevailed. Dix held on to the third position. Troy Loomis, Sherills Ford, N.C., came from the back of the pack to a fourth place finish with Abingdon’s Willie Gibson in fifth.
The Dutton brothers repeated a double victory. Cody Dutton picked up another Ucar victory adding to his points lead. His younger brother, Cole Dutton, picked up the Pepsi Hornet win adding to his points lead.
Cody passed Pie Short, Abingdon, who suffered a fuel pickup problem on the last lap for the victory. Jake Eaton, Bland, rounded out the top three. Cole led from green to checkered in a caution free Hornet race. Jon Keyes, Sugar Grove, finished second and Cody Umberger, Rural Retreat, repeated a third place finish followed by Clark Cooper of Rural Retreat.
Visit online at WytheRaceWay.com for more details on upcoming events. The next couple of months will provide some exciting racing. The “Battle of the Blue Ridge” is a co-promotion with Wythe Raceway and Friendship Speedway featuring the FASTRAK Late Models. Fans may save $5 by bringing the ticket stub from the previous race at each respective track. It is only a short distance to each track and will allow fans to see two races over the 4th without having to spend a lot on gas.
