Clinton stumps in Abingdon

Washington County News: News >
Sat Feb 09, 2008 - 08:43 PM

By MARK SAGE/Staff\

Former President Bill Clinton hunted for a theme song somewhere between “Don’t Stop Thinking About Tomorrow” and “Yesterday” during his campaign stump stop for his wife in Abingdon on Saturday.
Speaking to a beyond-capacity crowd at a town hall meeting at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center, Clinton said Democratic presidential hopeful New York Sen. Hillary Clinton is the candidate who can bring change to Washington and the nation and allow the country to revisit the good economic times it enjoyed during his administration.
Clinton’s Democratic rival Illinois Sen. Barack Obama has cast himself as the candidate for change throughout the primary season. Even his Web site’s name, obamaforchange.com, carries the message. It was a message the former president took issue with throughout the evening, several times referring to his wife as “a world-class change-maker.”
“She is the change agent in this race,” he said. “It’s one thing to talk about it. Another to do it.”
At the same time, former President Clinton said a vote for Sen. Clinton would be a vote to generate more jobs and to reduce poverty more than in during his eight years of his presidency.
The ex-president summed it up by saying the country’s leaders need to “get back in the future business.” A vote for Hillary Clinton is a vote for that, he said, noting that she would push for clean, independent energy – including solar, wind, biomass and, to a round of thundering applause from the largely Southwest Virginia crowd, clean coal technology – creating jobs along the way. He said the Clinton energy plan would create, through green building initiatives, thousands of jobs, for everyone from high school dropouts to college graduates, that cannot be outsourced. He also said the push for clean coal isn’t just pandering to voters in coal-producing areas.
“If we can’t get clean coal, we can’t help the Chinese out of the fix they’re in,” he said.
He pointed out that the Bush Administration recently cut funding for the construction of an Illinois coal-fired plant that incorporated clean-coal technologies. He said that clean coal is important for the country and that America has overcome greater obstacles than figuring out how to capture carbon dioxide from coal plants. Bush’s 2009 budget request does ask for $647 million to explore ways to capture carbon dioxide emissions from coal facilities.
Hammering the theme of reclaiming the future, the former president also pushed Clinton’s health care and job reform initiatives throughout his speech to the more than 1,500 at the higher ed center. And she’d start, Clinton said, “by repealing the tax cuts that were given to the oil companies two years ago.”
He said that every young person in the room should support the idea that the federal government should help the elderly with drug costs. If they don’t, he said, there’ll be little money left for things like education, raising children or buying homes.
“You need the senior population of this country to be healthy.”
He said there should be a volume discount for buying drugs, and there is, for Veterans Affairs, big corporations and state governments, but not for the federal government purchasing on behalf of the nation’s seniors.
“You want to get rid of that, you elect Hillary president.”
The former president said the government needed to be reformed.
“The special interests have got it by the throat,” he said.
A Clinton presidency would begin to reform by not appointing cronies to important positions. It would then get rid of the “embarrassment” of no-bid contracts and stop politicians from rewriting scientific reports, he said. Next, Clinton said, it would stop paying companies to shut down American plants and re-open them overseas and not allow taxpayer money to subsidize special interest groups.
He promised the crowd that Clinton would restore America’s leadership in the world.
“She wants to send a different signal to the world,” he said. “She’ll say, ‘America is back.’”
However, Clinton said his wife understands that America cannot solve any problems alone. He said she would promote diplomacy to friend and foe and would work to bring the war in Iraq to a close as quickly as possible.
Clinton said he’s sometimes asked if there’s anything Hillary Clinton is more conservative on than President Bush.
“There is one thing,” he said. “The budget.”
Again he pointed back to his days in the White House, noting that as first lady Clinton had enjoyed the days of budget surpluses. Now, he said, “We’re borrowing money from the Chinese to buy oil from the Saudis.”
The former president said everything he’d promised carries a price tag. Some may even require borrowing. But not all borrowing is bad, he said. Borrowing money to buy a car is good. “If you have to borrow money to eat dinner every night, you’re in trouble.” That’s what the government does, Clinton said.
“Republicans don’t like the Clintons very much,” he said. “I think it’s because we won twice and our ideas are so much better.”
However, Clinton did have kind words for one Republican, presumptive Republican nominee Arizona Sen. John McCain. Calling attention to his wife’s experience, he said though the two disagree Sens. Clinton and McCain are friends and have worked together well.
Clinton said he’d call it a great day when the nation elected its first black president, its first Hispanic president and its first female president. However, this election, he said, was about more than being first.
“Our country is in a serious fix today,” he said. “What we need to do is elect the best president.”

Reader Reaction:

Dear Citizens of Southwest Virginia,

Unfortunately I was one of the many Florida voters disenfranchised by the Democratic National Committee in the recent Democratic primary.  I am a self employed female that is struggling to make ends meet, so I can’t contribute financially… but I hope my voice will be heard.  I am disappointed by my fellow Americans, that seem to blindly follow “leaders” without scrutiny.  After the past 7 years we seem to be going down that path again.  Ms Clinton’s opponent is the “Pied Piper”, having his followers march and dance to his beautiful music.  Unfortunately, I’ve heard the same tune before.. with George Bush, (not quite as eloquently, though!)  Knowing that experience counts, now, more than ever, how could the American people be so gullible, to let another candidate have “on the job training”, at our expense… I don’t want to take the CHANCE.  The emperor doesn’t have any clothes, and it is my obligation to point it out.  In closing, I’d like to dedicate this tune to Mr. Barrack Obama… “Money Can’t Buy You Love!“  I ask the Democratic voters in southwest Virgina to support Hillary Rodham Clinton for President of the United States of America!

Respectfully,

Dear Mr. President, thank you so much for doing a great job by going around telling people about Mrs. Clinton.  People are very fortunate to have her to choose from.  She will be a great president that this country desperately needs.  I cann’t wait for the day that she comes in to fix this terrible situation that this country is in.  God bless you and your family.

There seems to be some confusion between health insurance and comprehensive healthcare. People need to be very careful about getting those two things confused. What Senator Clinton intends to do through her mandatory healthcare plan is force, (through possible “post taxed” dollars, fines or wage garnishing) individuals to line the pockets of health insurance companies. Much like the Bush administration has held Americans hostage, forcing us through high oil/propane prices to line the pockets of Exxon, Chevron and Haliburton etc.

It should also be mentioned that the insurance company responsible for halting the 1993 healthcare reform plan of the Clinton Administration—Health Insurance Association of America (HIAA), now America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP)—paid President Clinton $150,000.00 dollars in June of 2005, to deliver a speech to their board. I believe it should raise a red flag to those supporting/endorsing Senator Clinton to recognize the problematic relationship created by this. The language that now crafts Senator Clinton’s healthcare plan, which is not particularly dissimilar to that of the Clinton administrations plan in 1993, mirrors AHIP’s proposal in remarkably unsettling ways that warrant examination.

Below is the link regarding the aforementioned information confirming the $150,000.00 dollar payment made to President Clinton for his speaking engagment.

Lastly, If you think that having health insurance through your job means you won’t have to pay Senator Clinton’s mandatory health insurance premiums - think again! According to a September 18 Associated Press article, Clinton said in an interview with the AP: “... she could envision a day when ‘you have to show proof to your employer that you’re insured as a part of the job interview—like when your kid goes to school and has to show proof of vaccination,‘ but said such details would be worked out through negotiations with Congress.“

Go Obama!

What’s Right With Hope

Hope and happiness seem to be on Huckabee’s side. Haven’t you noticed? Huckabee’s people are happy. They’re hopeful people. What could be better for America than to let the world see that Americans are happy, hopeful people?

To matters of practicality.

Huckabee has begun a dialogue with many foreign leaders, having visited 40 countries in the past. Don’t you know that his infectious personality has already influenced leaders on America’s behalf?

The fact that Mike Huckabee has been able to visit over 40 countries, even prior to his bid for Presidency, speaks well of Mike. He is a hard-working, ambitious man who is willing to use his skills as a great communicator to influence the world for the good of America.

The media has been proposing that one reason for Mike to stay in the Presidential race is that he is having the time of his life. May I propose to you that the reason for Mike to stay in the Presidential race goes much deeper. As it is evident that he has a record of being a hard-working man, he’s continuing to work hard to become America’s next President because he cares deeply about the future of our Nation.

I’m amazed Bill Clinton would even consider coming to southwest Virginia.  NAFTA was his special project.  Soon after it officially started, just about every clothing plant and furniture plant in Chilhowie and Marion shut down because the jobs were relocated to another country.  Thousands of people in southwestern Virginia lost thier jobs.  It was so bad, the Los Angeles times newspaper even heard how bad it was out here and wrote a lengthy and detailed article about how bad NAFTA affected our region.

NAFTA hurt bad enough the first time around.  Now Hillary will hurt us with a crazy health care plan that will make big insurance companies worse that the big oil companies are today.

There is no way I will vote for a Clinton again.  I plan on voting for Obama in the primary.  And if Hillary does get the presidential nomination, I will vote for the Republican candidate in November.

I am an American living in Canada and I cannot believe that the country is falling for this media driven candidate.  Exit polls keep reinforcing that people think Clinton would be a better president but they vote for Obama because he inspires them and they think he’ll unite the county.  He’ll tear apart the party by bringing up the validity of superdelegates but he’ll unite the country?  Nice try.

It’s interesting that the youth vote is driving up his numbers.  When is the last time you listened to an 18 yr old about how to live your life yet you’ll let the same age group dictate who is going to be the leader of the free world. I want young Americans to be active in politics but to suggest that you’ll vote for a repbulican if Hillary is the nominee is foolish. That would indicate that the issues are secondary for you which is probably why you’re voting for Obama.

Go HILLARY!

I was supprised when Sen. Clinton stated that she was able to “borrow” money to continue her quest.  I still remember the “cattle futures” and land on the river in Arksas, and the money raising from the Monks back during the first Clinton administration.  I wonder if she will “promis” to return all the china and silverware and furniture that was ransacked from the White House.  Will she promise the Lincoln bedroom for hire or will Frm President Clinton reside there.
Just wondering?

I will never vote for the Clinton’s after they betrayed us all with Nafta! Millions of American jobs were shipped to Mexico after this “brillant” Clinton masterpiece. No more political dynasties for me, thank-you very much.

Oh, and that fake letter from a supposed disenfranchises Florida voter. I have seen it in about 10 forums now, always signed with a different name, but always the same message.

The Clinton’s need to stop these ridiculous tactics, because it only shows them as being desperate. What I want to know is why is Hillary Clinton taking money from the same Saudi political financier that George W. Bush does. Why does she take so much money from Indian Outsourcing companies that ship hundreds of thousands of American jobs over seas.

The Clinton’s have betrayed the honest, hard-working American. NO MORE CLINTONS!!!!!

I’m voting for a real change in America, because it is about damn time.

Stop McCain! Please vote for Mike Huckabee today.  Although overall Huckabee will probably not get enough delegates to win, it is very possible for him to get enough to keep McCain from getting the 1191 delegates that he needs to win!  That would mean we would have a brokered convention where real solid Republicans would choose our candidate.  We can have a say through our state delegates.  Instead of liberals and independents who put McCain over the top, conservatives would have a chance to get a candidate who would unify our party and have a chance at gaining the White House!  A vote for Huckabee is a vote to say NO to McCain!

Most of Hillary’s support comes from women who thinks it is time for a woman to have a shot. Well, then we may as well vote for Marie Antoinette or Leona Helmsley if they were to appear on the ballot.

Let’s get real. One should vote for a GOOD CANDIDATE who just happens to be a woman. Hillary voted FOR the Iraq War. Hillary served on the WalMart board that engaged in union busting. Hillary voted for the bankruptcy bill while saying she “hoped it would not pass”. Is this the kind of leadership we want in the White House? Bush Lite?

Now if you want to help a GOOD WOMAN win office. Help Cindy Sheehan defeat Nancy Pelosi!
http://www.cindyforcongress.org/

I live in CA and can attest Pelosi is a total sellout who must be defeated. Inspite over 900 plus documented lies by the Bush-Cheney regime to get us into Iraq, Pelosi would not consider holding impeachment hearings. She needs to go.

Why was Chelsea Clinton taking a 23 year old Super delegate out to breakfast yesterday? ( Awais Khaleel, a 23-year-old college student who hails from Kenosha, Wis. Khaleel, vice president of 75,000-member College Democrats)

Because that appears with Obama heading to certain victory her only way of winning is through the back door. And Hillary was mad that the guy on TV said they were pimping out Hillary?
What else do you call it? Everyone knows it was not a sexual usage of the word. I cannot ever remember someone wanting something this badly. Watching Hillary, I am learning new things about human behavior.

EXACTLY - the verbiage may have been poorly chosen, but the sentiment was fair enough.

Records of these two candidates should be scrutinized in order to make an informed decision.
Senator Clinton, who has served only one full term (6yrs.), and another year campaigning, has managed to author and pass into law, (20) twenty pieces of legislation in her first six years.
These bills can be found on the website of the Library of Congress (http://www.thomas.loc.gov), but to save you trouble, I’ll post them here for you.
1. Establish the Kate Mullany National Historic Site.
2. Support the goals and ideals of Better Hearing and Speech Month.
3. Recognize the Ellis Island Medal of Honor.
4. Name courthouse after Thurgood Marshall.
5. Name courthouse after James L. Watson.
6. Name post office after Jonn A. O’Shea.
7. Designate Aug. 7, 2003, as National Purple Heart Recognition Day.
8. Support the goals and ideals of National Purple Heart Recognition Day.
9. Honor the life and legacy of Alexander Hamilton on the bicentennial of his death.
10. Congratulate the Syracuse Univ. Orange Men’s Lacrosse Team on winning the championship.
11. Congratulate the Le Moyne College Dolphins Men’s Lacrosse Team on winning the championship.
12. Establish the 225th Anniversary of the American Revolution Commemorative Program.
13. Name post office after Sergeant Riayan A. Tejeda.
14. Honor Shirley Chisholm for her service to the nation and express condolences on her death.
15. Honor John J. Downing, Brian Fahey, and Harry Ford, firefighters who lost their lives on duty. Only five of Clinton’s bills are, more substantive. 16. Extend period of unemployment assistance to victims of 9/11.
17. Pay for city projects in response to 9/11
18. Assist landmine victims in other countries.
19. Assist family caregivers in accessing affordable respite care.
20. Designate part of the National Forest System in Puerto Rico as protected in the wilderness preservation system.
There you have it, the fact’s straight from the Senate Record.
Now, I would post those of Obama’s, but the list is too substantive, so I’ll mainly categorize.
During the first (8) eight years of his elected service he sponsored over 820 bills. He introduced
233 regarding healthcare reform,
125 on poverty and public assistance,
112 crime fighting bills,
97 economic bills,
60 human rights and anti-discrimination bills,
21 ethics reform bills,
15 gun control,
6 veterans affairs and many others.
His first year in the U.S. Senate, he authored 152 bills and co-sponsored another 427. These inculded
**the Coburn-Obama Government Transparency Act of 2006 (became law),
**The Lugar-Obama Nuclear Non-proliferation and Conventional Weapons Threat Reduction Act, (became law),
**The Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act, passed the Senate,
**The 2007 Government Ethics Bill, (became law),
**The Protection Against Excessive Executive Compensation Bill, (In committee), and many more.
In all since enter the U.S. Senate, Senator Obama has written 890 bills and co-sponsored another 1096. An impressive record, for someone who supposedly has no record according to the spin meisters and mindless twits.

The Clintons’ Multi-Million Dollar Dubai Conflict-of-Interest
By Tom Fitton
FrontPageMagazine.com | Wednesday, January 30, 2008
In the most recent Democratic presidential debate in South Carolina, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama threw off their gloves and attacked each other for their suspicious and scandalous ties.  And you know what?  They were both right!
Here’s a story this week that makes my point with respect to Hillary:

According to the Wall Street Journal:  “Former President Clinton stands to reap around $20 million—and will sever a politically sensitive partnership tie to Dubai—by ending his high-profile business relationship with the investment firm of billionaire friend Ron Burkle.  Mr. Clinton is negotiating to end his relationship with Mr. Burkle’s Yucaipa Cos. as part of a broader effort to protect the presidential campaign of his wife, Sen. Hillary Clinton, from potential conflicts of interest.”
It’s a little late to worry about conflicts of interest, don’t you think?

Hillary has served in the Senate during Bill Clinton’s tenure with Yucaipa, which began in 2002, all the while in a position to vote on issues that could impact Burkle’s (and, through Bill, Hillary’s) empire.  Bill Clinton voiced no concern about a potential conflict of interest when he was handed a large stake in Yucaipa with no risk and very little work required.  Now he can just collect the checks.

Moreover, this $20 million payoff does nothing to eliminate the conflict of interest.  In fact, it makes it worse.  Presumably, since Hillary Clinton shares a bank account with former President Clinton, they can use the money to fund her candidacy for president, if she so chooses.  Overall, Burkle has contributed large amounts of cash to the Clintons’ campaigns, their legal defense fund, and to the Clinton Presidential Library in Little Rock, Arkansas.

The question is, and has always been, what will Ron Burkle get in return for his generosity to the Clintons?  Especially if Hillary wins the presidency.

Now Obama, for his part, was slammed for ties to indicted political fundraiser Antoin “Tony” Rezko, or as Hillary called him, “a slumlord.”
(By the way, a photo surfaced recently that suggests Hillary may have her own Rezko scandal to worry about.  Check it out here.)

So the Clintons reap millions as a result of partnering with a foreign government These are troubling times for those of us concerned about pubic corruption.
