The Chilhowie Warriors used a wild eight-run fourth inning to defeat the George Wythe Maroons 11-5 in a Hogoheegee District baseball game played Friday afternoon at GWHS.
The Warriors got seven of their 10 hits in the inning to score eight runs, despite getting their head coach thrown out of the game during that period.
With the victory, Chilhowie moved into the district top spot at 6-1. The Warriors are 11-4 overall.
George Wythe drops to 5-1 in the district and is 6-5 overall.
The Maroons looked to be in fine form early on as mound ace Devin Smith gave up a single in the first but retired the side in order in the second and third innings.
George Wythe gave him a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Kelly Kline led off by rapping a solid single to left field. He stole second base, went to third on a ground-out and scored on an infield hit by Smith.
GW threatened to do more damage when Brett Grimes doubled to right field, and Josh Stephens walked to load the bases with only one out.
But Chilhowie starter Aaron Clampitt retired the next two batters. Clampitt pitched the entire seven innings and scattered nine hits. He also did well at the plate by going 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Marcus Little was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.
George Wythe was led at the plate by Devin Smith who went 3-for-3 and Kline who was 3-for-4. Brett Grimes, who relieved Smith on the mound in the fifth inning, went 2-for-3 with a walk.
The Maroons went down in order in the second and loaded the bases on three walks in the third, but again Clampitt worked out of it.
The Warrior fourth inning uprising started with Little leading off with a bloop single to right center. Then Clampitt beat out an infield hit. Scott Pennington followed with an RBI single to tie the game.
With one out, Adam Powers gave CHS the lead with a single to left and Aaron Phillips doubled to right to make it 3-1. Another run scored on a ground-out and another on an error before Little garnered his second hit of the inning, this time a two-run double to make it 7-1. The last run came on an RBI single by Clampitt, also his second hit of the inning.
During all of hitting and running around the bases, Chilhowie Head Coach Jeff Robinson was ejected from the game after a dispute with an umpire.
The Maroons managed just one hit, a single by Kline, in the bottom of the fourth.
Then Kline made a couple of nice fielding plays in center field to keep the Warriors off the bases in the top of the fifth.
GW rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fifth on singles by Smith and Grimes, a walk and a bases-loaded throwing error that allowed all three runners to score.
The Warriors tacked on three more runs in the sixth on a single by Lucas Dowell, a walk to Josh Jackson and a two-run double by Clampitt.
Grimes then took over the mound duties and was touched for an RBI single by Pennington to make it 11-4.
The Maroons scored their last run of the game in the bottom of the sixth on three consecutive singles by Kline, Robert Yonce and Smith.
George Wythe is scheduled to be home today against Northwood. GW is slated to travel to Auburn on Wednesday and is home this Friday against Patrick Henry.
