For the second week in a row, the Buffaloes came from behind in the fourth quarter to beat a Wythe County team on the road. First, it was a 40-39 overtime win at George Wythe. Last Friday Floyd came back to beat Fort Chiswell 28-25 at Max Meadows.
Floyd stopped the initial Pioneer possession when Chase Vaughn recovered a fumble at the Buffalo 40. The Buffs didn’t get a first down on that possession, but got the ball back two minutes later.
Floyd got first downs on a nine yard pass from Luke Harris to Brett Holman, a one yard carry by Holman, and a 17 yard run by Zach Bonham. Harris hit Christian Rodrigue with a 15 yard touchdown pass for the score. Nathan Weiss kicked the PAT and Floyd led 7-0 with 12 seconds left in the first quarter.
The Buffs got the ball back early in the second quarter after the defense forced a three-and-out. Floyd quickly moved the ball into Pioneer territory as Harris hit Ethan Griffith with a seven yard pass, Bonham ran for 10 and Fort Chiswell was flagged 15 yards for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Bonham ran for three, Harris hit Rodrigue with a ix yard pass and Bonham ran for seven to the 16. On the next play, Bonham ran for the touchdown, and the PAT by Weiss made it 14-0 at 8:54.
The Pioneers got back in the game on one play, as Chris Rodriguez took the kickoff at the 20, went left, reversed field, and then cut back to the middle and went for a touchdown. Kyle Mabry’s kick made it 14-7 at 8:32.
The Buffaloes answered with a six minute drive. Chris Slavicek returned the kickoff 16 yards to the 33.
Rodrigue made a leaping 11-yard catch on a pass from Harris and then Harris hit Slavicek for eight and Daniel Bradford for 11. On fourth and two, Harris ran for 10.
Bonham for 12 for a first down at the 26, and then for seven for a first down at the 10. From there, Harris hit Holman on a roll out pass for the touchdown. Weiss’ PAT made it 21-7 at 2:13.
Floyd forced a three-and-out and took over at the 18 after a 51 yard punt by Rodriguez. Harris went past midfield on a keeper, but the play was erased by a penalty.
Harris fumbled at the Pioneers recovered at the nine with 19 seconds left. Hody Viers hit Zach Cook on a slant pass and Cook scored the touchdown with 16 seconds left. Bradford blocked the PAT kick and halftime ended with Floyd up 21-13.
In the third quarter, Floyd ran only two plays before the Pioneers got the ball back at the 46 on an interception. Fort Chiswell moved the ball more than six minutes before getting a touchdown on a 17 yard pass from Viers to Anthony Wisman. The PAT pass was incomplete and the Pioneers were within 21-19 at 4:47.
Floyd failed to answer on the next drive, but backed up Fort Chiswell with a punt to the 12. In the closing seconds of the third, Holman picked off a Viers pass and ran it 26 yards into the end zone. But a roughing-the-passer penalty gave Fort Chiswell a first down at the 23.
On the first play of the fourth quarter, Viers hit Wisman with a short pass which Wisman turned into a 58 yard gain to the Buffalo 18. On third and one, Rodriguez ran seven yards to the two and on the next play, went into the end zone. The PAT pass was incomplete, but Fort Chiswell led 25-21 with 10:41 left in the game.
Floyd started the next possession at the 21, and Harris went up the middle on a keeper and went 79 yards to the end zone. But a holding penalty wiped out the score.
The Buffs picked up three first downs, but on fourth and one at the 25, Harris was tackled behind the line and Fort Chiswell got the ball on downs with 6:29 left in the game.
The defense forced a three-and-out, and a short punt gave Floyd the ball at the Pioneer 47. Harris hit Holman with a 19 yard pass, and Bonham ran 14 yards to the 14.
On second and 14, Harris hit Rodrigue with an 18 yard touchdown pass over the middle. Weiss kicked the PAT and Floyd led 28-25 with 3:44 left in the game.
The Pioneers picked up two first downs, with a 12 yard carry by Rodriguez getting the ball to the Floyd 37. Harris broke up a third down pass and a fourth and six pass was incomplete, giving the Buffaloes the ball on downs at the 33 with 1:24 left.
Bonham carried for three and nine for a first down as Floyd ran out the clock.
