Buffaloes beat Patrick County 28-13

The varsity football team scored 28 unanswered points, overcoming a 13-point first-half deficit to beat Patrick County 28-13 at Floyd Friday. It was the second straight home victory of the season for the Buffaloes.
The Group AA Cougars won the toss and deferred, with Floyd taking the first offensive possession. Craig Slavicek took the opening kickoff to the 45, and Floyd moved to the Cougar 37 on a 13 yard pass from Luke Harris to Daniel Bradford.
But two plays later, Floyd fumbled a handoff and Patrick recovered at the 47. The Cougars got the game’s first score on a 53-yard, all ground drive.
Senior tailback John Harris got most of the yardage, including a scoring run of eight yards. Chris Atkins kicked the PAT and Patrick led 7-0 at 2:46.
Floyd got one first down on the next possession, as L. Harris hit Christian Rodrigue with a 27 yard pass to the Patrick 36. But Floyd lost the ball on downs on the first play of the second quarter at the Cougar 30.
A holding penalty and a two yard loss by J. Harris on a tackle by Chase Vaughn stuck Patrick with second and 21. But quarterback Jacob Reynolds changed the field with a 48 yard run to the Floyd 33.
On fourth and seven, Reynolds carried for nine for a first down at the Floyd 21. From there, J. Harris broke tackles and scored on a 21-yard run. The PAT kick missed at Patrick had a 13-0 lead at 7:45.
Floyd moved the ball well on the next possession, as L. Harris hit Brett Holman with a 7-yard pass and Zach Bonham ran 11 yards up the middle to the Cougar 49. On fourth and two, L. Harris ran 15 yards to the 25.
Two plays later, L. Harris hit Holman on a 23-yard wheel pattern for a touchdown. Nathan Weiss kicked the PAT to trim the margin to 13-7 at 4:12.
Patrick’s next drive ended when Bonham intercepted a pass and took it to the Cougar 37. L. Harris hit Rodrigue with a 30 yard completion to the 18.
Harris hit Holman with a pass a ten yard pass to the eight and then found Holman over the middle for an eight-yard touchdown. Weiss kicked the PAT and Floyd took a 14-13 lead 40 seconds before halftime.
On the first drive of the third quarter, J. Harris moved the ball to the Floyd 33 on a 12-yard run. But an unsportsman-like penalty against Reynolds killed the drive.
Patrick stuck Floyd with a punt to the two. The Buffs got some operating room when L. Harris hit Ethan Griffith with a 28 yard pass to the 33.
Floyd had to punt, but the Cougars fumbled and Holman recoverd at the Patrick 30. The Buffs, in turn, gave the ball back on downs at the 26.
Patrick came up short on fourth and two and Floyd got the ball on downs at the Cougar 35 in the closing seconds of the third quarter.
L. Harris ran 10 yards to the 16 and two plays later, hit Bradford on a 16-yard bootleg pass for a touchdown. The Weiss PAT made it 21-13 with 10:09 left in the game.
Just over a minute later, the Buffs got another touchdown when J. Harris fumbled and Holman scooped up the loose ball and ran 47 yards for the touchdown. Weiss’ kick made it 28-13 with 8:49 to go.
Patrick got good field position on a pooch kick on the ensuing kickoff at the 46. But the Cougars lost the ball on downs with 6:55 to go.
Floyd lost a fumble with 2:49 remaining, and two major penalties sandwiched around a 25 yard pass completion put the Cougars at the Buffalo 12 yard line. Holman stopped the drive with an interception and returned the ball 40 yards to the 42.
The Buffaloes lost the ball on downs, but Bradford stopped the final Cougar drive with an interception with 28 seconds remaining.
