8th grade wins district football title

The eighth grade football team beat Giles 30-18 at Floyd Thursday, to finish the season as undefeated Three Rivers District champions. The Buffaloes were 4-0 in district play and 4-1 overall.
Floyd had to rally from a two-touchdown deficit late in the second quarter, but closed out the game scoring 24 unanswered points.
The Spartans took the game’s opening kick and picked up two first downs. On second and nine, Brad Kessinger found Mark Albert open behind the secondary and Albert went 53 yards for a touchdown. The PAT pass was incomplete and Giles led 6-0 at 3:56.
Rodney Whitlock returned the kickoff 18 yard to the 47. Daniel Memmit had two five yard runs for a first down, but a fumble gave the Spartans the ball back at their 40.
Giles got one first down to close out the first quarter. Early in the second quarter, on fourth and two, Kessinger broke free for a 36 yard touchdown. The PAT pass was incomplete and Giles led 12-0 at 7:10.
It took Floyd less than a minute to score. Eli Overstreet returned the kickoff 14 yards to the 44. Two plays later, Memmit broke a 49 yard touchdown run. The PAT run failed, and Floyd trailed 12-6 at 6:13.
Kessinger answered immediately, returning the kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown. The PAT run was stopped and Giles had an 18-6 lead at 5:55.
Floyd picked up three first downs on the next drive, but lost a fumble at the 29. the defense held and forced a punt.
Matt Hollandsworth hit Overstreet with an 18 yard pass and then again for 23 yards to put the ball at the six. Hollandsworth went churning up the middle on the next play.
Hollandsworth was met at the five, but the Floyd offensive line won a scrum of bodies and Hollandsworth pushed into the end zone for the score. Hollandsworth added the PAT run and Floyd was down 18-14 with 48 seconds left.
The Floyd defense got the ball back with nine seconds left but did not score.
The Buffs started the third quarter at the 35 after the Spartan kickoff went out of bounds. It took just three plays for Floyd to take the lead. Hollandsworth hit Overstreet with a short pass and Overstreet got a block near midfield at the right sideline from Dale Conner and went 71 yards for the touchdown. Memitt ran the PAT and Floyd led 22-18 at 6:03.
Giles drove to the Floyd 12, but on fourth and eight, Hollandsworth intercepted a pass from Kessinger and brought it back to the 15.
Hollandsworth hit Memitt with a 15 yard pass as the third quarter ended. Early in the fourth quarter Hollandsworth found Overstreet down the middle for a 51 yard touchdown. Memitt ran in the PAT and Floyd led 30-18 with 5:13 left.
Down by two possessions, the Spartans got the ball only more time. Floyd made a stop on fourth and one with 2:59 left and kept the ball the rest of the game.
A 28 yard touchdown run by Overstreet was erased by a penalty.
