70+ face drug charges, Grand jury hands down indictments

Smyth County law enforcement officers continue arresting suspects in the wake of a special grand jury’s release May 22 of indictments on drug-related charges. Following are those indictments that have been served.

Others remain sealed in the Commonwealth Attorney’s office pending arrests.

Indictments do not mean the accused is guilty, but only that a grand jury finds there is sufficient reason to send the case to court.

This special grand jury has been empanelled for more than 20 months and was reactivated in April after taking a break. Evans requested that the Circuit Court empanel the special grand jury in mid-2005 to investigate drug-related activity.

In late October 2006, this grand jury handed down indictments on more than 200 drug charges against 101 individuals. At that time officials said that the special grand jury would look into crimes associated with prescription medication diversion, doctor shopping and the continuing methamphetamine problem.
